Review: TALL STORIES: THE ELMER ADVENTURE, artsdepot ImageThe Elmer Adventure, inspired by David McKee’s beloved patchwork elephant, bursts onto the stage with a kaleidoscope of colour and charm. The production gently unpacks themes of individuality, self-acceptance, and embracing difference in a way that resonates with its young audience.

Visually, the show is vibrant and exciting. The beautiful set by designer Amanda Mascarenhas is colourful and inventive, evoking a jungle brimming with playful energy and imagination. From oversized elephant shaped red flowers to shimmering streams, every element pulses with life, reflecting the inner world of Elmer himself, a wonderful metaphor for the diverse ways minds can work and see the world. The lighting design by Rajiv Pattani is wonderful at enhancing the joy, with the clever use of a back-lit screen.

The original songs are catchy and uplifting, cleverly woven into the story to highlight the overcoming of Elmer’s struggles in connection with his herd and the journey to embracing his personal qualities.

Performers Frankie Turton, Rob Astillo and Petra Joan-Athene bring fantastic energy and talent to the production. The cast provides great commitment to the delivery of the action, with the choice of the character of Rob overcoming his lack of belief in the magic of Elmer creating a path.

The children in the audience are somewhat engaged, singing and clapping along. The musical interludes are among the show’s strongest moments, reinforcing key messages in an uplifting way.

The highlight came towards the end with the stunning giant puppet model of beautiful Elmer expertly created by Yvonne Stone as puppet designer. The use of Elmer is altogether too sparse and seems an odd choice not to use it playfully for longer periods.

At 55 minutes, the show feels a touch too long for its target audience, and it may test the patience of accompanying adults. While the themes are vital and well-intentioned, the script doesn’t operate for grown-up viewers, missing the opportunity to engage families on multiple levels.

However, The Elmer Adventure succeeds where it matters most: in reaching young minds and hearts. It provides a safe, inclusive space for children, especially those who identify with being different to feel seen and celebrated. Elmer’s journey offers a warm and welcoming starting point.

While not quite hitting the mark, this production wears its heart proudly on its patchwork sleeve, offering joy, empathy, and a valuable lesson in loving what makes us unique.
